Cody runs a tripping program unlike any other summer camp in America. With over 75 trips offered over the four weeks, each camper has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of trips that are both fun and challenging. From ball games in Boston, to sightseeing in Montreal, to deepsea fishing expeditions in the Atlantic, the Cody tripping program is exciting for all campers.
Each summer Cody rents new 15-passenger vans to transport campers to their trip destinations. All Cody drivers must have a clean driving record for the past three years, and take the defensive driving course taught by the National Transportation Safety Board. For added safety, every trip leader carries a cellular telephone so that they have instant communications with the camp.
As with all Cody electives, trips are designed to be fun, challenging and stimulating, and are geared to the skills and abilities of the boys and girls participating. Some of the more popular trips include:
Deep Sea Fishing
Join our tremendously popular half-day or full-day deep sea fishing trips! We fish off the New Hampshire seacoast near Portsmouth. All of the fish our campers catch is brought back to camp for our chefs to prepare as an extra course for dinner!
White Water Rafting
This is perhaps the most popular trip at Cody. Campers twelve and older, with parental permission, can go on this two day trip to northern Maine. We raft on the Kennebeck River for its great rapids and beautiful scenery. The trip includes a great steak and barbeque chicken dinner provided by the rafting company at the end of the day. This truly is a trip with a lifelong memories virtually guaranteed!
Hiking
Cody is located on the southern edge of the nationally-famous White Mountain National Forest. We have rivers, lakes, forests, valleys, and of course, mountains, right on our doorstep. Cody's hiking program involves SKILLS-REQUIRED TRIPS. This means that a camper needs a certain skill level to participate in the trips. We run easy hikes for beginners to waterfalls and swimming holes as well as some of the smaller mountains in Maine and New Hampshire. The more challenging trails and mountains that intermediate hikers might try include Mt. Chocorua, Green Mountain and some of the Presidentials. More advanced Cody hikers can hike some pretty difficult trails and peaks including Tuckerman's Ravine, Mt. Washington or Mt. Madison. Hikes might be as short as half a day, a full day, or even run overnight. With such spectacular scenery and surroundings it's a shame not to get out and experience what tourists from around the world come here to see.
Geology
These half-day or one-day trips take campers to local mines such as Ruggles Mine, the oldest mica, feldspar and beryl mine in the nation, or Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves to explore the topic of geology. Mineral panning and digging is permitted, and campers might find any one of more than 150 minerals, including: beryl, mica, amethyst, rose and smokey quartz and garnet.
Animal Wildlife Centers
Budding naturalists can visit local wildlife centers including the Squam Lake Wildlife Center and Scarborough Marshes. These are popular trips and normally last for either half a day or a full day, depending on the itinerary. We also run trips to the Boston Aquarium.
Marine Biology
Scarborough Marshes near Portland, Maine, and Odiorne Pointe just south of Portsmouth are just two of the areas that campers can visit on Marine Biology trips. We also visit the Atlantic shoreline on tide-pooling trips which are very popular. These trips are usually half or one day trips, and there are no age or skill restrictions to participation.
Plays and Shows
The "Barnstormers Theatre" is the oldest continuously running theatre in America just fifteen minutes from Cody in Tamworth, NH. Drama and theatre enthusiasts can sign up and attend shows there, or in North Conway as well as the famous Blue Man Group in Boston. Shows are normally in the evenings and therefore don't interfere with regular daily activities. Night-time shows are normally restricted to campers ages eleven and older.
Water Parks
Saying, "We're going to a Water Park", normally brings cheers from Cody campers and staff alike! And for good reason. Cody trips to local Water Parks are awesome! Campers get to spend these full-day trips with their bunkmates and cabin counselors tubing, going on water slides, splashing about in wave pools, bobbing along rivers with cascading waterfalls, socializing, going into wave tunnels and much more. It's no surprise that they're so popular!
Major League Baseball
The Boston Red Sox play just two hours from Cody! Our Red Sox ball games are very popular events. These full day trips will have campers and staff traveling to Boston in our fifteen passenger vans for the game.
Minor League Baseball
We're just one hour from the Hadlock Field, the home of the Portland Seadogs! This very successful minor league team is affiliated to the Boston Red Sox. Every game has a true home-town atmosphere, and campers always seem to be able to get player autographs much easier than at a major league game. We normally attend evening ball games so as not to interfere with regular Cody daily activities.
Whale Watching
The departure point for these incredible half-day trips is just over an hour from Cody. The commercial whale watching boat leaves the docks just south of Portsmouth, NH, for the short trip out into the Atlantic. Almost everyone who goes on a whale watch will have memories and probably pictures of the remarkable sight of whales surfacing close to the boat. If you're really lucky, you'll get to see whales breaching, which is when they leap out of the water into the air! There is no age or skill restriction to go on this half-day trip.
Canoeing
Cody's canoe trips take place on several local rivers, and last either half a day, a full day, or overnight with two day trips. Canoeing is another "Skills-Required Trip". Beginners try the easy, calm and very shallow Marina Trip, or the Bear Camp River, both of which last a half day. As skills increase, campers might try the Ossipee River, or the regionally famous Saco River. These are both run as one day canoe trips. We also offer a two-day Saco River canoe trip. Finally, more advanced canoeists can tackle white water canoeing upstate on the great Androscoggin River. White water canoeing is a full-day trip.
Kayaking
Once Cody campers have completed our lake kayaking program they can sign up for Cody's kayak trips. Like the canoe trips, these are "Skills-Required Trips". Campers must have the skills, techniques and safety abilities to match the river they're kayaking. Kayakers go on the same rivers as our canoeists, with beginners using the Marina Trip or the Bear Camp River. For those who are up to the test, we offer a white water kayaking trip on the Androscoggin River through some fantastic rapids!
Mountain Biking
Cody's bike trips are all "Skill-Required". We run trips for all skill levels, from beginner through advanced. Mountain biking begins with gentle half-day trips. We then work up to full-day biking trips in the White Mountain National Forest. Most of our biking trips are done as either half- or one-day trips. We also offer special trips where more advanced bikers can bike down Cannon Mountain, Loon Mountain, or Sunday River. You'll take your bike in a huge cable car to the top of the mountains and then bike to the bottom, repeating this several times during the day. These are incredible trips which build confidence and skill, all within a beautiful mountain setting. Mountain biking is one of the most popular trips we offer at Cody!
White Mountains
The White Mountains and White Mountain National Forest offer some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. A number of Cody trips are run in the White Mountains, and almost every camper will visit the area at some point during the summer as part of a regular camp trip. It's possible that a cabin might take a day trip into the mountains and spend part of it hiking to a local falls and then swimming at Lower Scenic Falls, a set of huge rocks in the middle of the Swift River. These mountains are rich in natural and human history, with so many wonderful places to explore!
Regional Sightseeing
Cody is located in one of the most beautiful parts of America. Just north of us is the White Mountain National Forest, and the Atlantic Ocean is only an hour southeast of Cody. We're surrounded by lakes, rivers, forests, parklands, hills, and mountains. On many trips campers see much of the scenery and many of the key sights of our region. It's rich in beauty, history and culture, and we want our campers to sample as much of it as their busy camp schedule allows.
Atlantic Ocean
Many campers will have the opportunity to visit the nearby Atlantic Ocean. They may do so as part of an all-camp, or bunk-trip to the beach. They might be sailing on the ocean with a deep sea fishing or whale watching trip, or wading the shoreline exploring tide pools, or visiting an ocean marsh as part of a Marine Biology program. Some campers might choose to explore the cliffs and coastal beaches while visiting Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine.
Acadia National Park
Unquestionably Acadia National Park is one of the most popular parks in America. Cody's Acadia National Park trip is three busy days of fun along spectacular mountain and shoreline scenery. Campers can take any number of hikes, bike around Mount Desert Island, shop for souvenirs in Bar Harbor, swim in the ocean, and visit "Thunder Hole". This trip is normally available to campers aged twelve and older, and some trips might require skill in either hiking and/or biking.
Hike/Bike/Canoe Biathlons and Triathlons
Cody's famous Kokopelli Triathlons and Biathlons are probably the most demanding and challenging of our summer trips. They are definitely "Skills-Required" and the level of difficulty is part of their appeal to many campers. These trips take place in our local area and further north in the White Mountains. There is no age restriction, but skill and aptitude are what count here. There are several types of trips, with an intermediate level and an advanced level. The biathalons are a mix of hiking, biking and canoeing. The triathalons always have all three activities, with varying level of difficulties for each segment. Whatever the case, just participating in a biathalon or triathalon at Cody is an achievement in itself.
Rock Climbing
This high-adventure trip involves an instructional one-day rock-climbing course for all levels with International Mountain Climbing School (IMCS). IMCS climbing professionals take campers to one of the several great climbing spots in the White Mountains, including White Horse and Cathedral Ledges, or other ledges off of the Kancamagus Highway. Campers learn about safety systems, commands, and team-work on this challenging and popular trip.
Climbing Wall/Laser Tag
Campers can enjoy some fun and excitement at the Sunday River Adventure Center's laser tag arena and climbing wall for a half-day. Campers learn the basics of climbing and gain confidence on an indoor climbing course, and then have an afternoon of laser tag.
High Ropes Course
This trip to the Attitash Grand Summit Challenge Center will give campers great thrills as they tackle the fun and challenging obstacles high in the tree tops. They may be climbing, swinging, tight-rope walking, zipping, or jumping in order to complete the course, all within a safe system facilitated by trained ropes course personnel.
Horseback Riding
Cody's Horseback riding trips combine excellent staff, experienced horses and amazing surroundings for a memorable day on the trails. Beginner riders play mounted games and explore trails while more experienced riders might trot, canter, or jump. There are two horse stables located within ten minutes of Cody and riding trips usually run 2-3 times per week.
