Staff

Who are Cody Staff Members?

Having a great staff is essential to running a great program, therefore we take special care in finding the most qualified and dedicated people to staff our camp. Staff members at Cody come from all over the world and many have been campers at Cody themselves. Most are university students and teachers who have extensive experience working with children and are well-qualified in their respective field to instruct the many activities we run at Cody. With one of the best camper/staff ratios in the nation, counselors and counselors-in-training (CITs) are able to work together to provide a well-rounded program that caters to the individual needs of campers. The diverse background of our staff members also allows us to work comfortably with children of all nationalities and capabilities. Campers receive intensive individual and small group instruction in a wide range of activities as they increase skill levels and build self confidence. Just like campers, Cody staff are here to have a fun summer, and they work hard to make each camper's stay a memorable one. Above all, Cody staff members are here because they enjoy working with children and seeing them grow through the years to reach their own potential in whatever they choose to do.

Staff rotate nightly in-cabin coverage with other cabin staff. Cody staff also help run special events or evening programs as needed, and will also leave camp on certain camp trips to provide supervision. Maintenance staff care for overall trash collections, repairs or minor construction projects, painting, grass and grounds care. Kitchen, medical and office staff duties are self-explanatory. Special Events: In addition to regular in-camp activities, Cody offers a wide range of inter-camp team and individual activities for campers and staff. We may also have social events with girls' and boys' camps in the area. Cody operates one of the largest trips programs of any camp in North America. All program staff will have the chance to go on some trips during the season. For example, you might find yourself on any of the following trips: deep sea fishing, whale watching, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, hiking, biking, geology, marine biology, plays and shows, major league baseball games, Canadian trips, ocean trips, museums, nature science trips, photography trips, water parks, carnivals, circus visits, sightseeing, Acadia National Park and trips to the White Mountain National Forest.

Staff Facilities: Staff have access to many camp activities and facilities. Our requirements are the following: 1) Staff must be on a day off, or have free time cleared by the office when they are not assigned to a department, cabin or special event. 2) Staff may not participate in an activity that is teaching campers at that time, unless they have permission from the staff running that activity. 3) Staff must check with department heads before joining or doing any activity during free time. Certain activities can only be done with certified staff supervision by official camp instructors ie. riflery, archery, woodworking, all waterfront. Camp may also occasionally provide a vehicle to off-duty staff at night.

Staff Benefits: Salaries reflect the size of our camp and the age, experience, and position of an employee. Room, board, weekly laundry and workman's compensation is included and the state has no sales tax. Staff cars are permitted (we need copy of license/registration). There are four days off per season and some free time daily. Most staff live and eat with campers. Staff coming before staff week or staying after camp for post season work are paid $200 per week with room and board provided free. Cody is academically accredited for staff doing field work credits in recreation/camping/phys-ed etc. We enjoy a large staff return and employment is by formal contract under New Hampshire State laws.

Season: Cody operates an eight-week summer season with four two-week, two four-week, two six-week and one eight-week sessions for campers, and a week of pre-camp staff training and orientation. During "staff week" we open cabins and departments, and set-up equipment. Intensive briefings also take place covering camp operation, policies, departments, games, and camper reviews. It is a busy, but fun week. A dozen or so staff choose to arrive early and up to several dozen stay "post-season", for one or two weeks in August to help with other mini-camps we run then, as well as do general fix-up work. If this is of interest to you, please let us know ahead of time.

Application Procedure: If you are interested in joining us at Cody, please carefully fill in the on-line application and email it to us, or, contact us to request application materials.
